The Pallet Research Sculpture

“THE PALLET SCULPTURE”

In 1998 Judith won a design competition for a large outdoor sculpture to be dedicated to Dr. George Stern, who had founded the Pallet Research Center at The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Dr. Stern was affectionately known as “Mr. Nails” because of his very extensive research into proper fastenings for wooden pallets.  Thus, the motif for Judith’s design was giant nails connecting symbolic pallet components.
The sculpture was to have been nearly 30 feet tall on the grounds of the Center and would have had a water feature plus an area around it for workers in the Research Center to relax and/or eat lunch.  Due to funding problems the project was ultimately abandoned.

A broader view. Notice the tables and stools shaped like nail heads!
